An existential crisis without end

IN the run-up to Labour’s “loveless landslide” in July last year, I was among many who warned of the potentially catastrophic consequences of allowing Sir Keir Starmer into Number 10. I predicted that his administration would rapidly prove to be one of the most unpopular in Britain’s history - and so it has.

His victory was met with resigned, weary acceptance by the British people with not one shred of jubilation in sight. The pervading anger and sense of despair soon erupted into violence on the streets when yet another atrocity was committed by a young man with an immigrant background, this time in Southport. Horrifyingly, those who took part in the subsequent riots and even more chillingly, those who merely commented approvingly on social media, received knocks on the door from police. Many were arrested and some jailed for their conduct. Never before in the modern era save in a time of war, has a “free country” like Britain (remember when we used to call it that) sought to imprison people for merely expressing outspoken views in public.

Since then, a bad situation has inevitably got very much worse, with pro-Palestinian marches taking place relentlessly, week in, week out. The demonstrators are not just Muslim extremists but many white British who seem to have no concept whatsoever of the mortal threat to our country that radical Islam poses. Yet these people outrage the rest of us with impunity, confident that in two-tier Britain, they will face no consequences.

This week marked a new milestone in the depths to which Britain has sunk when what looked, to outward appearances, like a well-laundered, mild-mannered white Englishman from Tunbridge Wells, a student of Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford, stood up in public and called for all who believe in the state of Israel to be murdered. Fortunately the Daily Telegraph got hold of this sickening footage and following a public outcry, 20-year-old Samuel Williams was arrested by police and suspended from the university. It remains to be seen what happens to this idiot but it’s probably a safe bet that he won’t be handed a 31-month prison sentence like Lucy Connolly for an ill-judged but rapidly-deleted tweet. To watch the footage of this ordinary-looking young man aping the demented demagoguery of Islamic hate preachers was an utterly grotesque sight and a terrifying symbol of what is happening to the indoctrinated youth of this country.

The ray of sunshine amid the gloom is the rise of Reform UK and the possibility that despite our unfair electoral system, Nigel Farage might sweep to power come the next election. Can they do it - and if so, will they have the moral courage to pull our country back from the brink? The RCM offers Reform our qualified support - but only on the basis that they truly are a new broom in British politics capable of the far-reaching and in some respects, unpalatable changes needed for this country to have any hope of a decent future.
